We'll pick you up from your hotel or from the indicated point in Angra do Heroísmo at the indicated time and begin our route to the volcanic caves of Terceira on board an off-road vehicle or a van, with the leafy forests and the characteristic fields of hydrangeas keeping you company along the way.
Cutting through the lesser-traveled trails of Terceira and making various stops at places known only to the guides, we'll arrive at the Guilherme Moniz crater, 640 m (2,099 ft) high. Here you can see the island's most important geological features: the Algar do Carvão and the Gruta do Natal. We'll tour these volcanic caves, exploring their interiors and the Azorian vegetation which flourishes inside, including holly, moss, and laurel.
During the tour, we'll discover the unique geological features of each site. Although often referred to as a cave or grotto, Algar do Carvão is actually the interior of an empty volcano, a geological phenomenon unique in the world. We'll venture into the volcanic chimney to admire the vegetation growing on its walls, its impressive stalactites, and the small interior pool resting at the bottom.
Gruta do Natal, meanwhile, is not a traditional cave but a genuine lava tube formed by underground magma flows; we'll explore its galleries while learning about its formation.
Next, we'll visit Furnas do Enxofre, a geothermal field famous for its active fumaroles that release sulfurous steam directly from deep within the Earth. After a 3- to 4-hour tour exploring these unique landscapes, we'll head back to the starting point or your hotel.
